Yoshihiko Shimo

Yoshihiko Shimo was born in Hiroshima, Japan and began studying oboe with Satoki Aoyama and Otto Winter at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2005. He received his Diploma with distinction in 2009 and was awarded the “Ataka Prize“ which was given for the best student of the university. In October 2009 he started taking lessons with Christian Wetzel at the Cologne School of Music where he successfully finished his masters degree with distinction in 2014. Since October 2014, he studies concert performance with Kai Frömbgen at the Robert-Schumann School of Music in Düsseldorf.

Yoshihiko took part in numerous master classes with Gernot Schmalfuss, Ingo Goritzki, Stefan Schilli, Klaus Becker, Francesco Di Rosa, Jonathan Kelly, among others. He held fellowships at the Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation in 2009, at The German Academic Exchange Service in 2010 and at the Villa Musica Foundation in 2011. In Japan he received an award for talented young musicians at the 19th Chugoku Youth Music Competition in 2002. He was prize-winner at the 25th Japan Wind and Percussion Competition in 2008 and won the 1st prize at the German Contest of Schools of Music with his Wind Octet.

As soloist, Yoshihiko performed in numerous concerts in Europe as well as in Asia, e.g. with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and the Geidai Philharmonia , interpreting Richard Strauss’ oboe concerto. He regularly performs as principal oboist with the International Bach Academy conducted by Helmut Rilling and with the German Chamber Academy Neuss . Since 2013, he is principal oboist at the Lower Rhine Symphony.

Yoshihiko is very active as a chamber musician and was awarded several international prizes as a member of the ARUNDOSquintett . Furthermore, he joined the Linosensemble in 2015.
